How It All Began

This is me at around 34 weeks
I am often asked questions about cloth diapering. How it all began, when did I start, and how do I do it with twins? It is really a simple story.  I have 2 older children, a son who is 10 years old and a daughter who is 9. When we found out we were expecting, we were surprised. When we found out we were expecting twins, we were shocked beyond all belief!  How could this happen? Where did the twins come from? And most important,  how were we going to afford adding two more to the family?  I knew I would nurse them and that would save a ton of money, but what about all the diapers we were going to need? Imagine  using almost 500 diapers per month, 6,000 diapers per year (more if they aren't potty trained by age 2) and spending almost $6,000! That's  is a LOT of money to spend on disposable diapers! Roll that around on your toung for a minute....SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS. Seriously, I thought that was insane.  So one day I decided to google cloth diapers.  I remember the day clearly. My husband asked what I was doing and my reply was simple "I am going to see if people still use cloth diapers". His immediate response was, "like pins and plastic pants?"  To which I said " well, they did it for hundreds of years before disposables came out, so if they could do it..we could. " Let me just tell you, I was amazed at what I found!!!

I sat at that computer for hours, days in fact! I wanted to read everything I could about these amazing "modern" cloth diapers, they had velcro now! As my pregnancy progressed, so did my excitement. I told my aunt of my plans on using cloth and she so very generously purchased us a gift certificate for an on-line cloth diaper store. I picked out a few diapers, ordered them, got them home, and promptly inspected them! I ordered Thristies wraps, Chinese pre-folds, bumGenius pocket diapers and a diaper sprayer.  I washed them with care and then put them away until the time came when I would need them.

Fast forward several months later when the babies have arrived and are now about 2 months old. I had completely forgotten about my cloth diapers! But with sleep deprivation and twins...can you blame me?  So I pulled out my bumGenius diapers that were huge on my boys and laughed. What was I thinking? (Remember, I had no store to go to and no one to talk to) I decided to give it a try and I used one.  Other than looking kind of ridiculous on a tiny preemie baby, it worked fine.  So the next day I used two of them. I think I was tired on the third day - so I went back to sposies.  And that is how the cycle went for several of weeks. It was easy! I promptly went online and purchased some more. Before I knew it, I was down to my very last disposable diaper (the boys were about three-and-a-half months old by now). What was I going to do? I remember calling upstairs to my husband, "honey, this is our last disposable diaper, are you ready to go cloth 100%?" I asked.  "Let's do it!" was his response. I am proud to say that my babies are now 27 months old and have never been in a disposable diaper since that day!

We had to go through the learning curve like everyone else. We had to figure out what worked for us as far as washing the diapers, folding the prefolds the correct way, and yes - dealing with leaks and a side-sleeper (that's a whole new post) eventually it all came together. Now, there is nothing easier to me than using cloth diapers. Just like anything else in life, it is a choice, it is new, and it needs to be learned. It takes a little bit of work and some determination. But now, I cannot even imagine always having to run out to the store to buy diapers again. I can't image dealing with the diaper gene always running out of plastic inserts, lol. And I can't imagine rolling up a poopie diaper and tossing it into the trash; the entire idea of that grosses me out. I love cloth and I wouldn't have it any other way!

But my story doesn't end there, I was so in love with cloth I wanted everyone out there to learn about cloth diapers. It didn't take long before Cutie Poops and Bottoms was born and we opened our doors in November of 2009 when the boys were 7 months old.  Every day that I come to work at the store, I love it. I love the sense of community I feel with all my local cloth diapering families, and I love seeing the same faces over and over again and those little babies growing up with fluffy bottoms- knowing I had a part in that! My next venture? This blog!! So help me spread the word.....

    7. I am looking forward to following your blog! My husband and I frequent your store for all our cloth diapering needs (soap, inserts, mommy's need (want) for a new diaper!). I had 2 boys in cloth, my 2 and a half year old is now potty trained, so I only have my little guy that is cute in cloth. Thanks for your store, as well. Quite a learning curve to start cloth diapering, but being able to connect with you and your staff and have our questions answered made everything so much easier!

    42. I just read your blog - we like you have twins - now they are just 8mths old but came 6wks early weighing in at only 3lbs 15oz and 3lbs 10oz - we have boy/girl twins. Totally can relate to the sleep deprivation and using the sposies at the beginning - got lots of different kinds of cloth diapers and finally around 3mths or so went all the way cloth. Can't wait to see where your blog will take us all... Racquel Stewart mom to Landon 6yrs old and Noah/Lucy 8mths old

    50. This is a wonderful story! I especially related to it because I had one child already and then got pregnant with twins (and we were shocked too!). I also breastfeed and cloth diaper my twins- and made the decision to use cloth when I was pregnant with them. Thanks for sharing your wonderful story!
